Founded by only 7 persons in Montmartre, outside Paris, France in 1534, today the Society of Jesuits is the largest Roman Catholic religious order, comprising more than 18,000 members in ministries located in over 110 countries on all six continents. Throughout its almost 5-century history, the Society of Jesuits has seen rises and falls, wars and revolutions, births and death of entire countries and empires, and managed to withstand the test of time by following their faith and dedication to the Lord. Named after the word, meaning a person that “refers to Jesus too often”, the Jesuits never initially accepted this name, although people were referring to them only in a positive manner.
The society has followed its initial principles strictly from the moment of foundation and has expanded its activities all over the world. The first and foremost goal of Jesuits was to educate people, giving them knowledge both in primary sciences as well as theology. Soon after its foundation, the society has initiated numerous schools throughout Europe, and established learning facilities in all the lands that were visited by Jesuit missionary. The second goal of the society was to bring the word of the Lord throughout the world, and wherever the Pope will tell them too. This resulted in a very intense missionary service that couldn't be matched by other Christian societies. Jesuits have traveled all over the world and even the very first members of the society have been to places like India, Indonesia, Japan, Tibet, and many others.
Today the Society of Jesuits remains to be true to its initial goals, spreading knowledge and the word of God everywhere all over the world. And even if it has become easier these days, it was the Society of Jesuits that played a major part in forming the world we live in today. With their missionary work, these people have given the first push to making the world a much more connected and global place to live in. And their faith was the strongest driving force that let this happen.
