St. Francis Xavier is highly acclaimed by Jesuits and Christians in general for his enormous work in the field pioneering missionary activities and organization of believers. The time he spent in India with the followers of St. Thomas order, has become the foundation for future Jesuit missions and had given the society a general blueprint to follow in missionary activities. He was one of the first Christian missionaries to Southeast Asia, and the first of Jesuits to visit and spend some time in Japan, and these efforts has made a very significant impact on the whole global movement of Christianity at that time and the centuries that followed.
Francis Xavier is regarded as a Catholic saint. On 25 October 1619 he was beatified by Paul V and canonized at the same day with his companion in Jesuit mission Ignatius Loyola by Gregory XV on 12 March 1622. Francis Xavier is regarded as the patron saint of missionaries, feasted on 3 December.
Being of Navarre origin, Francis Xavier is highly venerated in Spain and Latin America countries, where Javier and Francisco are one of the most popular names given to newborn boys.
